For how long can my child visit a boarding school?

The 6 week „Taster Course”

This course is ideal to experience life at a boarding school. Your child will join the daily school routine and benefit from the many advantages of school life: their English skills, vocabulary and speech confidence will strengthen through study, sports and activities, they will pick up many study and motivational skills and make new friends. The course normally runs from early June to mid-July, which is when the UK school year ends. It is also possible to go at other dates, please contact us to discuss. Ideal ages: 13-18

One Term – 3 months

Spending a full term at a boarding school will result in a significant improvement in your child’s English skills, including spoken, written and reading. They will have sufficient time to get fully involved in school life, develop friendships and new social skills. They will be encouraged to participate in the many activities the school offers, some of which will be new and exciting experiences which will stay with them once they return to their home school. Starting dates are September or January or April each year. Ideal ages: 13-18

2 Terms – 6 months

Spending 6 months at a boarding school is a great choice and a big step towards mastering English and deepening the experiences of a 3 month stay. In most cases the student can still rejoin their class at the home school, though some extra exams may be required. Starting dates are September or January each year. Ideal ages: 13-18

Full year

Spending a full school year at a British boarding school is the experience of a life time! Not only will your child have superb English and a host of other great communications and exam taking skills, they will also have a major advantage when applying to any university in or outside of Europe. Ideal age: all secondary school years, except the very last.

Two years

Ideally this is a 2 year course which ends with British A level exams or the International Baccaraleurate (IB). This is a smooth path to any university in our outside of Europe. Ideal age: last two years of secondary school.

Foundation Year

Many children, on the brink of adulthood, may have finished secondary school, yet not be ready to progress to university and need some time to work out their next steps. Spending a full year or even some months in a British school, focusing on subjects of their choice, will provide them new insights and deeper knowledge in their areas of interest as well as improved English and exam skills. Whilst they live at the school in a safe and supervised environment, they do enjoy more freedom of movement than the younger ones and have more autonomy over their daily routine. Ideal age: after finishing exams at secondary school.

What is the consultation?
During a personal or online video chat we get to know your family and the student. This meeting lasts about one hour, participants are one or more collegues from Springboard, the student and one or both parents.

This consultation is free and does not place any obligations on you. The goal is to give you as much information about the schools as possible, answer your questions and for us to understand your expectations, aswell as the personality, hobbies, sports, school grades of your child.

We will cover all the aspects which play into selecting the best school for your child. There is a huge variety of schools in terms of geographical location, size, academics, proximity to large cities and airports, choice of sports, music and other activities. Schools also differ regarding how long a student can stay with them, whether or not they have any free spaces available, whether they have any bursaries. There are many other aspects which we will share with you as they will play into the decision you as a family will eventually make.

For students in their last two years of secondary school we will discuss the advantages of doing A levels or IB, how and why studying in Britain will give them the best preparation for entrance exams to a European or US university.

We will discuss the proposed timing of the stay in the UK and how best to fit it into the home school year. Based on the above we will recommend 4-6 schools where we propose to start the application process.

What are the starting dates for a boarding school stay?
School years are divided into 3 terms. It is best to join a school at the beginning of a term, ie. in September or January or April.

The best timing for the 6 week Taster course is either from September to mid October, or from early June to mid July.

How does the application process work?

Please refer to the steps in the Application menu.

What school fees should we expect?

School fees are quoted per term (appx. 3 months). There is quite a variety of fees among the schools, typically a term will cost between GBP 12,000-14,000.

What grants or bursaries are available?
Bursaries and grants offered by the schools change periodically and depend on availability. All schools aim for a harmonious mix of students and may offer incentives to student with special talents in art, music or sports. These may apply to a single term or to a full school year. We always have up to date information regarding these and will happily share this with you.
How do schools handle Covid?
By now all schools have gained sufficient experience to handle Covid rules and aim to run a normal school both for daytime schooling as well as afternoon activities. There is regular testing at schools to isolate positive cases. Many schools stay open during Autumn and Spring holidays so students can stay at the school and reduce exposure to infection during travel.
